Don't move
flammable, combustible, corrosive, or explosive items such
as paint, gasoline, and ammunition. Keep your phone
connected through moving day to stay in touch with friends,
family, and the moving company.
Prior to Move
Plan and measure where your furniture will be placed in
your new home. Its helpful to draw a layout of your new
home and sketch in the major furniture pieces. To save time
on moving day, move your boxes from the basement, upstairs,
or attic to the main floor prior to the move date. Consider
carrying items from the back yard to the front yard or
garage ahead of time. Lawn Mowers & gasoline equipment
should be drained before loading.
Boxes
Mark your boxes clearly. Mark fragile on boxes containing
dishes, glassware or delicate items. Reinforce the bottom
of boxes with extra tape for added strength Pack a bag of
personal items you'll need during the move such as a change
of clothes, toiletries, medicine, maps, food and drinks.
Keep it in an easy to find place.
List the contents of the box on the side of it. Label each
box with the name of the room in your new home where it
should be placed or number the boxes and keep a list of
which boxes go in which room in your new home. Pack your
TV, stereo, and computer in their originals boxes if
possible. Gather boxes in small sizes from friends,
neighbors, stores and the office.
Packing
Place china in plastic bags and stack plates upright on
their sides, not flat. Jewelry, important papers, and safe
deposit box contents should be packed and kept with you
throughout the move. Only Light-Weight clothing may be left
in drawers (use your best judgment on how much you leave in
drawers). Small items must be packed in sealed boxes.
Collect cushioning materials such as bubble wrap, Styrofoam
pellets, furniture pads, old blankets, plastic bags, tissue
paper, newspaper, and small towels to use as padding inside
boxes. Create a "portable packing kit" with markers, tape
measure, packing tape, twine, and scissors. Carry it with
you as you pack up items around your home. Keep boxes to 50
pounds or less.
Pack heavy items into their own smaller separate boxes and
combine lighter items together into larger boxes (don't
combine heavy items such as books, all into one box).
Appliances
Major appliances - Remove all loose fittings & accessories
and pack separately.
Disconnect washers, dryers & refrigerator hoses. Disconnect
and bundle chords on TV & stereos. Label removable chords
with masking tape. Label boxes containing fragile items
with large red lettering.
